14 Gold PL Qualifier #1 Highlight

WHew!
Our first round of the 14 Power League Qualifier is over, thankfully.  We did not bring our best play during the day, except for moments in our third match. But we did prevail and hold our #3 seed overall to carry into next weekends play. Hopefully we will start the day much better.

We traveled up to Cascade Middle School in Vancouver and there was so much fog, that no one could see the sign for which school was which!  But the gyms were nice and spacious for pursuing balls. Just a little cold!  Cold is how we started our morning play with not much movement or intensity on the court. We struggled through our first match and won in 3, lost our second match in 3, but then after a break and some yummy food, we came out and played our match against NW Reign looking more like the team we had hoped to see. We played with confidence and intent and beat them in two sets. That created the first crossover against Rose City Gold, and we beat them in 2 sets also.  That allowed us to go home early!

Thanks to the parents who kept us well fed and encouraged the girls when they most needed it!  We look forward to a much higher level of play on both sides of the net as we enter the second day of Qualifier with the top 16 teams at Eastmoreland Courts.  Go OJ's!!

14 Yellow PL Qualifier #1 Highlight

We had a great day all around celebrating our first win of the season against Juniper in three sets.  We then lost in two to Silver foxes and finished our pool with a win in two against Aces teal. Our pool results ended with us in a three way tie for first, but due to points, we placed third. We were matched up with Aces Orange and won in two sets and immediately played Salem who we took a disappointing loss to in three sets. 25-20, 31-29, and 20-18. While fatigue was a factor here, I chalk this loss up to poor reffing!  Parents from the other team were agreeing with me! So, a bitter loss to end the day.
As for our refereeing, I am proud to say we did it and did it well! First game without a problem, but our second game, a few things came up once with me and another with the scorekeeping, and in all cases, we were right!! Woohoo! Super proud of us!
Every single player stood out throughout the tournament.  But if there's one player that stood out, it was Hazuki with her reliable serving, and amazing digs! We got some cheering down on the court and the bench which made every game so much fun!  All in all, I'm so happy with how we started the season and look forward to the season!

The Courts Friendship tournament

WOW.........what a fun way to start the year! OJVA 12 Gold started off the tournament looking a little rusty from the break but improved with every match to beat Athena in a thrilling three set finals. Many missed serves earlier in the day turned into consistent serving by the end of the day. No communication in the morning turned into lots of calling for the ball by the end. Letting balls drop turned into going for balls by the end of the day. It was great to see everyone come in and make a contribution. Lots of work to do this week before our power league but I am looking forward to seeing how we grow as a team this year. Great job 12 Gold!

Beaverton Friendship Tournament - 12 Black

The Black attack was back on track this weekend as the 12 Black team took 6th place in their pool.  The team used awesome teamwork and improved serving to pull off some impressive wins and battle hard with some very challenging teams.  New team cheers and great communication on the court helped this group of girls grow together as a team that is proving to be one to be reckoned with.

Fwd: More OJVA info

From: Marty Mozzochi <mozzochi2@comcast.net>
Date: Thu, Dec 12, 2013 at 10:38 AM
Subject: More OJVA info

To Parents:

Saturday: All activities are in Beaverton as a final reminder

Tuesday Parent Meeting:  The meeting is at 6 pm at Beaverton courts. Please try to have at least one parent there. Bring a checkbook!

Team announcements: Announcements of the 12's and 14's teams will be made on Wed (East) and Thur (West) practices. We know that some of the girls (and parents) will be excited and some will be dissapointed. Please remember that a lot of thought and evaluation has gone into the decisions, and we want the girls to be successful in their learning process.

Scorers clinics and tests: We ask that all players familiarize themselves with the scorers online clinic and test. It is a yearly requirement.
Every team should have 4-5 players who are very good at keeping score, so no one gets stuck doing it at all of the tournaments.
So please have your daughters go to this blog (http://cevaregion.org/VolleyBlog/Latest.html) read the info and go online to do the clinic/test.  Scroll down to the section that says Ref/Scorer Certification FAQs  and follow the directions.  They should try to do it before Saturday, as they will then have a chance to practice during the scrimmages.

For the newbies out there, in the club volleyball world, the kids do all of the scorekeeping, libero tracking, line judging and down refereeing.  The coach or head official is up on the stand refereeing the game. OJVA takes great pride in the fact that our kids pay attention and know how to do these jobs.

Final tournament schedules: will be handed out on Tuesday, with coaches names, phones and emails. Starting next week, please contact your individual coaches about any missed practices. There have been some slight changes to some of the schedules, but we have kept the events on the same weekends.  We just had to move some of the sites.

Attached is the dues payment amounts: including the monthly dues and the total yearly amount for each team.
Again, please bring your checkbook, as we cannot accept credit cards for dues payments. If you want to have a monthly draw taken out of your account automatically, you will need to give me a voided check (not deposit slip) and that will then happen each month. You can pay the full amount on Tuesday or you can pay your first months dues.

Hotel rooms: Presidents day Weekend hotels will be the ones that OJVA pays for for the 14's and 16's and 18's teams that are traveling out of the area.
16's and 18's Gold teams going to Eugene for  MLK will be on their own to find rooms.
12's rooms will be paid for in Spokane for 12 Gold, and at Willamette in Corvallis  for 12 Blue, White and Red in May. 12 Gold parents should get own rooms for that tournament. All other 14s and  16's attending the Willamette Volleyball Classic in May should get your own rooms for that also  (White, Red, Black teams).

Website for parent gear: OJVA and additional Nike items for the players.
Here is the website to purchase items directly.   https://www.bsnteamsports.com/index.php
The access code is mozzoc2JT
You go online, and pay directly and the stuff is sent to us. We will distribute it as soon as it arrives. It takes 3 to 4 weeks. The website will only be open for 7 days, so don't forget!!! The closing date is 12/18. (you are not required to buy anything, so ignore the red required note on the spandex item!)

Fwd: OJVA Upcoming events - 16's and 18's

Finally !!

News for all teams about events in the next 2-3 weeks.

1. Announcement of Teams
Teams will be formed in the next 2 weeks. Each age group may make their announcements on different days, but everything will be finalized by Tuesday, Dec. 17.  Teams for the Saturday scrimmages may be final, or there may still be some shifting after that day. We really want to find the best spot for your daughters, in terms of play time, improvement, experience, position and personality. Sometimes that means being on a higher team, but not playing as much, and sometimes that means being on a lower team and playing a lot more. Every situation within each team is different. Even after the teams are 'set' we are still allowed to move kids. Although we don't really like to do that, if we feel it is in everyone's best interest, we may. If we need players to shift to a different team to help them out due to a shortage of players for a particular tournament, we are able to do that also.

2. OJVA Day on Saturday, Dec 14
MORNING SCRIMMAGES  10 am -1 pm
The first is the intersquad scrimmages for the 12's 14's and 16's teams. That will start about 10 am and go until 12:30 or 1, depending on the age group. We use this day to have the teams/groups practice a set or match all the way from the start to the finish. For the newer players, we work on scorekeeping, reffing duties, rotating, subbing, switching, etc. For the 16's, the coaches get a chance to work on a lot of little "team things" in a very cooperative environment.  Usually we are using all 6 courts that day, as we will have 12 teams participating. We might even form some extra groups to get some more play in, we will see.

Each age group will be organized slightly differently, depending on what their priorities are at this time.

We ask that all players wear some uniform or tee shirt with a number on it. It doesn't need to be an OJVA one. It is ok if we have players on the same team with the same number, for this day. That helps us train the scorekeepers and remind them of their duties, especially with substitutions and serving order.

Players will arrive at 10 am, go through a game warmup, and then play. As I said, each age group will determine how long they will go for.

CLUBWIDE PARTY 5-10 pm
Then later in the evening, we have our CLUBWIDE PARTY that will go from 5-10 pm. The players can come dressed in casual wear. We will have pizza and soda for everyone, and we need some donations from parents.  If we could have the 12's and 14's families bring some treats, that will be plenty for everyone. There will be games, movies, music, volleyball, etc as well as some ice breaker events to get to know kids from other age groups. There seems to always be some sort of volleyball game going on usually. This will be the first chance that our 5 Eastside teams will have a chance to interact with our westside teams.

Players can wear anything they want from pajamas to work out clothes to jeans, to formals (JK). Just bring some tennis shoes if they want to play. Please DON'T wear school named wear (high school or middle school names on the shirts or sweatshirts) as we are now celebrating our OJVA family, not our outside other schools or factions!

This event is for ALL of our players, from 12's to 18's. It is a social event, but we also are planning to have a speaker.
Parents can drop off their kids, and then pick them up again by 10 pm.

So for now, if these folks can bring goodies for Saturday, Dec 15, 5-10 pm:
12's and 14's families by last name:
A-J  Bring desserts
J-R Bring side dishes  (fruits, vegies, dip, chips, crackers, salad, etc)
S-Z  Bring additional drinks   (juices, sports drinks, milk etc)  We will supply water and soda

If you have special dietary needs, please supply your own food for the evening. We will be getting a variety of pizzas from Costco as the main dinner.

We will also need some parent volunteers to help serve food and keep the cafe area clean
4:45 - 6:00  6-8 people
6:00 - 8:00 4  people
8:00 - 10:00 4 people

Please email me if you are interested in helping out that night.

3.  Parent's Meeting: Tuesday, Dec. 17th, 6 pm at Beaverton Courts
This is our yearly parents meeting that is mandatory.

PLEASE BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS!!!

Items that we will discuss:
Policies for the club, including play time, practice time, missing events, communication.
Dues payments
Team parents
Family tournament duties
Schedule of tournaments
Checking of parent information on printouts
Meeting of head coaches with parents

Dues Payments:
Unfortunately, we don't have the capability to take credit card payments for OJVA Dues.

Next week you will receive the sheet with the breakdown of the monthly dues for each team.

You have three options of how to pay:
A. Play the full amount up front with a check. Once again this year, we will be offering a 2% savings to anyone who pays in full for all of their dues. You save a little money, and you don't have to think about it again!

B. You provide us with a blank VOID check from the checking count you want to have the dues come out of. On the 15th of each month, we will make an automatic draw on your account. You don't have to remember to write us a check at all!  We also have the ability to take a monthly automatic draw out of your checking account for your monthly dues. The first draw will happen around Dec. 20, then it will happen on the 15th of each month.

C. The last option is to have you pay us each month with cash or check  (the least favorite option, for us!). You can mail us the check or drop it off in the dues box (West) or can (East).

EVERY FAMILY Needs to bring a check on Tuesday. Either a full payment check or a Voided check or a check for December dues.

OJVA monthly payments are due on the 15th of the month.

4. Reminders about practice policies:
Parents are to stay on the cement in Beaverton or in the glassed in area at Eastmoreland, not out on the courts. Coaches coach the kids, that is what you are paying us for!  Parents need to encourage kids before and after practice, but not distract the kids during practice. Players should always bring a full water bottle to practice (even when it is this cold

5. Winter Break times:
The last practice will be on Wednesday, Dec. 18 (East) or Thursday, Dec 19 (West). We will have limited coaches there on that day, as many will be traveling north to Seattle for the NCAA Division I National Championships. But the day will still be valuable for the kids.  Then there will be no practices during Christmas week. We will offer practices on Monday, Dec. 30 and Thursday, Jan 2 in Beaverton. Times will be posted on the website, once we know coaches availability. (16 Gold and 18 Gold may go on Sunday, Dec. 29 also)

6. First Competitions:
The 12's will be playing at a tournament at Beaverton courts on Saturday, Jan 4!!!  The 14's will have their first day of Qualifier on Sunday, Jan 5 at sites TBA.  So we are hoping that we can see especially the younger players during those practice days. The 16's Blue, White and Red (East) will play on Saturday, Jan 11 at Beaverton. The 16 Gold and 18 Gold will play in Eugene over MLK weekend.

7. OJVA and NIKE Gear:
Shoes will be offered to all of you via a website on Monday or Tuesday. I will send out the info to the website once I get it.  You will be able to order and pay directly and items will be shipped to you directly. No more middle man (me!)  Items will be offered at a discount, including shoes, knee pads, socks and some parent gear.

Thanks for reading all the way to the end!!!

14's Gold Nationals Pictures

OJVA 14 Gold

Top Row: Eva Wilch, Emily DeMots, Kathryn Decker, Nate Sutton, Coach Marty Mozzochi.
Bottom Row: Rebecca finn, Ashley Cox, Marissa Kolb, Abby Groh, Brooklyn Bevens, Jenny Marnin, Payton Wade.

This past year was a great success on so many levels. As I looked back at our opponents in Dallas, here are some fun facts:
Overall, we finished 5-5 in matches, 12-12 in sets
Our five losses were to:
FB Fire     Finished #1 overall  witrh a 11-0 record   We lost to them 26-24, 25-18
Vision Finished #2 overall  with  a 10-1 record   We lost to them 25-13, 30-28,
Miz LB14 Rockstar Finished #9 (winning Silver) with an 8-3 record We lost to them 25-9, 10-25, 15-13
CSVB 14 Open Finshed #13 oversall with a 5-4 record    We lost to them 27-25, 28-26
PSVBA 14-1 Finished #20 overall with a 3-6 record    We lost to them 22-25, 25-22, 15-9

Of he other five teams that we beat, none of them finished lower than 30 out of 48.  That tells me that we played very tough teams in our division, and didn't get any of the 'easy matches'!  It tells me that we had a tough pool to start with.
Our wins were over:
CIS 14M 25-20, 25-15      Finished #30
El Paso Stars 18-25, 25-23, 15-8    Finished #27
Assault 14 NFinity 23-25, 25-14, 15-10  Finished #26
Club West 14 National 25-19, 25-17    Finished #24
Premier 14 Gold 25-18, 25-21      Finished #22

All of our players contributed to our successes over the year, and at Nationals. For some players, who didn't get to play as much, their continued hard work in practice not only made them better, but it helped their teammates also. Their encouragement on the bench was incredibly important to the total team feeling that we had the whole time we were there.
